Sunlight warmed Elias's face as he hummed, sorting through the attic’s dusty contents. He'd decided to tackle the inherited clutter today, a task that had been on the back burner for far too long. He’d just finished a long, delicious lunch and felt the pleasant fullness settle in his stomach. Finding a box labeled "Mom's Old Work Stuff," he pulled it over, the wood creaking in protest.

He opened the lid. The air filled with the scent of aged paper and something else, something familiar but unplaceable. He sifted through invoices, memos, and a handful of black-and-white photos. A typed letter, creased and yellowed, caught his eye. It was his mother's name, bold and confident at the top, followed by a company logo he recognized from her stories.

He leaned back against a stack of forgotten luggage, the attic’s quiet enveloping him. He read the words, the careful language of a person about to make a significant change. It was a resignation letter. He felt a soft, comfortable lightness spread through him as he imagined his mother, young and determined, penning this very document.
